GG-loop is an architectural practice established in 2004 in Amsterdam by Giacomo Garziano. The studio works within an international network, deriving its strength from an interdisciplinary approach.
GG-loop works on different scales, ranging from urban planning to product design; it is also involved in art projects, such as video installations, digital sculpture and music performances, embracing various creative fields.
GG-loop believes that architecture cannot simply be a merely functional answer to spatial demand. Every space needs a story and this story acts as a filter between functional requests and creative intuition. The main goal in the design process is to create a unique question, based on the analysis of context, the necessities, possibilities and constraints.
This project seeks to generate new life, recreate a positive equilibrium, in a long and abandoned space. Based on the Voronoi diagram, the furniture spreads its cells along the walls of the apartment embracing and purifying the entire space.
This two-rooms apartment is the first floor of an old complex built in the 50s, made of typical local tuff stone. The young owners wanted to improve the quality of the space exploiting the beautiful 4 meters high vaulted ceiling by adding a mezzanine for the more private space of their bedroom.
Similar to the cells in a Human body, the different spaces inside ‘The Infection’ comprise a series of apparently random cell walls that not least due to warm, diffuse and atmospheric light create a purist atmosphere of calm and healing, to a certain extent resembling growing plants.
To a certain extent resembling growing plants. Wounds being to heal, regeneration kicks in, and the surfferes come more aware of themselves and their state of health, and consciously embark on the journey to recovery to regain strenght and restore the balance of mind and body.

The idea was to make the space as neat as possible, improving technologically installations and energy saving, adding character by creating a complex system of furniture embedded in the apartment.
A generative pattern made out of cells grows along the wall as a new plant, embracing the space. This system encompasses all the functions – storage, bookshelves, pantry, closet and wardrobe – of the house, whilst also improving acoustic performances.
GG-loop believes a good architect is like a scientist – able of arranging components in harmonious proportions to create a totally new element, a composer enabling the orchestra to perform his piece in the best way.
