Georg Lendorff is a German designer who has been working as a film and video artist for opera, theatre and exhibitions for 20 years, both for large international stages and events as well as for small experimental productions.
His work has received great international recognition and has shaped the use of video in the theatre. Georg Lendorff has received numerous awards and was twice nominated for the renowned Nestroy Theater Award.
UNFLUENCER – DE-SIN THE DESIGNER was created in close collaboration with the Zurich bag label FREITAG. At the invitation of the prestigious exhibitor Ventura Centrale, the installation was shown in a viaduct arch under Milan Central Station. It is based on the immersive light sculpture “First Light” by Georg Lendorff, which was shown for the first time in 2018.
The opera “Doctor Atomic”, premiered in 2005 at the San Francisco Opera, looks back on the last days before the test of the first atomic bomb. The physicists and engineers around Robert Oppenheimer live with their families in isolation in the New Mexico desert and experience a highly ambivalent situation.
They are the elite of American arms research, blessed with endless resources, driven by the impression of German seizure of power, and seduced by the incredible power that nuclear physics opens up to them. At the same time, the use of the atomic bomb with its cruel impact in Japan is emerging, which took place only a few weeks later.
Based on Gogol’s story, “Nos” – “The Nose” is a key work of the 20th century. A musical tour de force in which Shostakovich makes playful as well as radically different musical and aesthetic forms collide. In addition to rhythmically complex and atonal passages, there are quotes and folk songs. “Nos” features over 80 solo parts and includes the first drum solo in music literature.
Video installation in the Chocolat Frey visitor centre: Large format video projections on the walls of the two-storey exhibition room. A highlight of the visit to Chocolat Frey: the light is dimmed and the visitors immerse themselves in poetic music and video installation.
Dramma tragico in five acts by Georg Friedrich Händel. “Teseo” premiered in 1713 at the Queen’s Theater in London. Elaborate costumes and stage effects attracted a lot of attention.
At the end of 2009, there was a collaboration with the artist, author and director Christoph Schlingensief. “Learning to die, Mr Anderson dies in 60 minutes” was the result of a joint production by the Neumarkttheater Zurich, the Schauspielhaus Zürich and the Kunsthaus der Stadt Zürich.
One focus of Georg Lendorff’s work is experimenting with technical and artistic means. For him, researching and expanding the visual and scenographic vocabulary is closely linked to the content of the discussion. This always creates new, strong and engaging work.
