The sobriety of the black lacquered stem of the Brass Bell reading light enhances the golden brass finish of the borosilicate glass shade. Borosilicate glass, having a low coefficient of thermal expansion, is less sensitive to temperature shocks. A warm alliance of copper and zinc, brass is the only metal capable of imitating gold. It is noted for its colour, which varies from pink to yellow. When unlit, the shade is golden brass in appearance. When illuminated, the brass-coated glass becomes transparent, with the bulb becoming visible in a surprising hologram effect.The combination of technology with a noble rock creates an attractive tension between the eternal nature of the stone and the obsolescence of technology. A poetic table lamp: a luminous sphere in the opaque mouth-blown glass sitting on a solid walnut base, sculpted in relief, is evocative of the moon hanging over a desert-like surface – perhaps a lunar landscape, or an arid one eroded by the wind, such as the Atacama Desert in Chile.The Vulcain light speaks of man’s fascination with fire. Its body in carbonized solid beech evokes the look of trees burnt in a lava flow, using an ancient Japanese technique which renders the wood waterproof. When subjected to heat, the wood cracks, blackens, smokes, transforms. Destructive fire creates renewal, fashioning a savage kind of beauty.
